Internet censorship reaches india – file hosting websites blocked in india.

Got a tip from a twitter user and then I myself confirmed, most of the famous file storage websites has been blocked in India, starting today.  This is said to be a move to stop piracy. But clearly not a good one.

Most notable website www.rapidshare.com is also banned, when you try to open any one of these website from India, you get following message -

This site has been blocked as per instructions from Department of Telecom (DOT) .”

There is no news in media regarding the real reason for this ban, but as it looks like, this could be done to curb the piracy.  People are already bitching about it on twitter and other popular social networks.

List of all other major banned websites -
Mediafire.com
Rapidshare.com
If  you know any other website, which is also banned now, let me know, I will edit this list. Also, do tell your reaction about it, through comments.

update – you can still access these websites, if you remove www from address, http://rapidshare.com works :D

update 2- Seems like the ban is removed for now. That’s good sign, but I am not sure, for how long. Another blog covering this issue – http://www.zdnet.com/blog/india/india-starts-blocking-file-storage-websites-in-a-move-against-piracy/635

I agree with you, I don’t think this is a good move — this is definitely not the best way to get around piracy. In happier news, welcome to Livefyre, and please feel free to let us know if you have any questions or feedback for us!

indian govt. Have gone nuts… If they think blocking few file hostings can carb piracy then they are fools. There are 1000′s of such… You cant block them all and we always got ways around… what can they do block file hosting, block peer to peer hosting n what else…. We know to ditch em all. There are loads of proxy instruments… And the simplest is by google it… Hahah you can stop it… Piracy rocks!!
